Rita Marley Remembers Bob as a Shy Guy

In a constantly evolving #MeToo era, the all-encompassing, potent messages of Bob Marley are given a distinctly feminist flavour in Women Rising, the second instalment of the yearlong docuseries Bob Marley– Legacy, in celebration of Bob Marley’s 75th birthday. Released on March 31, which is significant because it is “the last day of Women’s History Month”, the video, which premiered on Marley’s YouTube channel, is enshrined in female political activism and empowerment. Marley and his songs become the subtexts which champion the rights of women, even using the once considered love anthem, ‘ No Woman No Cry’, as a rallying call for feminism.

Recipient of the 2019 Reggae Icon Award, from the Government of Jamaica.
In recognition of long & meritorious contributions to the growth and worldwide popularity of Reggae Music, and impactful humanitarian work through the Rita Marley Foundation.

Award was officially presented on August 6, by Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Andrew Holness and President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, during 57th Independence Anniversary celebrations, at the National Stadium.

On September 15, 2017, University of Fort Hare,South Africa conferred Dr. Rita Marley an Honorary Doctorate Degree for impactful contributions through philanthropy and music. It is Dr. Marley’s second award of this magnitude. In 2015, the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree for notable works in preserving and advancing Jamaica’s music and culture.
